Presentations

I have to admit that when I first started giving presentations I was really nervous. While I am not the greatest presenter in the world I have gotten more confortable doing it. I also really enjoy doing it because I thinks it gives me a chance to learn more about a subject. If you would like to ask me any questions about previous presentations or inquire about me presenting at your conference or user group meeting please contact me.

cfobjective 2011: Writing Your First jQuery Plugin

This was my first big presentation outside of the Adobe stack and I have to say I was quite excited about giving it. I have two goals when I give a presentation, educate the audience and become a subject matter expert. I don’t always have the fortune of meeting both goals but on this one I did. I had the ability to write plugins before this presentation but to speak on the topic I would need to learn a lot more. I went back to the roots and did some touching up on JavaScript and jQuery and its made me a better developer today.

This presentation starts off with a quick introduction of me and a walkthrough of the agenda. I then wanted to spend a couple minutes reviewing some jQuery performance tips and tricks. Like any other piece of code you write there is a way to make it work, and a way to make it work well. We then went through the building blocks of a plugin. We covered from start to finish how to build a real basic plugin using a simple example. Finally we went through a full featured example using the BlogSlider plugin I built for this presentation. You can find the link to the source code for this plugin below. While it’s nothing terribly exciting it does show some off some core concepts to building your own plugin.
