This is just a quick reminder for anyone in the Cleveland area. I will be giving a presentation on Thursday on ColdFusion components.

This presentation will cover the basics of ColdFusion components. Learn why they exist, what problems they solve and how they can organize and reduce development time. Components are an essential tool for today's CF Developer and after this presentation you will have a better understanding of when and how to grab this tool from your tool belt.

I hope you can come and check it and for those of you with questions, write them down and I will see you on Thursday. The link below has more details about the meeting.

Last nights Cleveland CFUG was a cfObjective preview with 3 great presentations. If you were unable to attend I have great news for you. The meeting was recorded via ColdFusion Meetup and can be found below. We were lucky enough to have 3 presenters last night and I thought all of them brought something to the table. You can head over the ColdFusion Meetup to get a description of all 3 presentations.

The Only Enterprise ColdFusion Conference...
May 1 - May 4, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza, Downtown St. Paul, MN!

Introduction to Model-Glue
Raymond Camden http://www.coldfusionjedi.com

This is an introduction to the Model-Glue framework. Basics will be covered but time will also be spent looking at real world Model-Glue.

Integrating ColdFusion 8 AJAX with Model-Glue Applications
Todd Sharp http://www.cfsilence.com

This presentation will examine several aspects ColdFusion 8 Ajax capabilities and how they can be leveraged to simplify adding Ajax functionality to your Model-Glue applications. A short introduction to the CF8 Ajax features will show Data tools and UI components and will highlight appropriate uses of these elements. The heart of the presentation will examine best practices for utilizing ColdFusion 8 Ajax functionality within your Model-Glue application. This section will examine when it is appropriate to route Ajax requests through your controller and when you should create and utilize a remote facade. Also included will be a short section demonstrating how to tap into the underlying raw Ajax frameworks on which the CF8 elements are built to extend them to meet your particular application.

ColdFusion as a Different Type of "Glue"
Brian Meloche http://www.brianmeloche.com

Is ColdFusion really "the glue" that Adobe says it is? We always hear about functions like PDF generation, image manipulation, Outlook integration and all of the new functionality, but is that all that ColdFusion is good for? Is ColdFusion for intranet use only? Can ColdFusion be a different type of glue? This topic will cover using ColdFusion as the front end to an enterprise-level, customer facing application, integrating it with a business object back-end from enterprise-level systems. This will cover what types of things you would need to integrate, levels of integration, ways to integrate, including MQ Series and WebMethods, WSDL vs. REST, direct vs. indirect integration, integrating with external applications, and data replication.

Flex 3 / AIR Pre-Release Tour Review

Yesterday we had a special meeting for the Adobe, ColdFusion and Flex user groups in Cleveland. The topic was Flex 3 & AIR and the presenter was Kevin Hoyt from Adobe. First off Just a big hats off to JD Schrock, Mick Keily and Brian Meloche for putting the meeting together. Also a big thanks to Dealer Tire for hosting the event.

If you have never heard Kevin Hoyt speak you really need to check him out next time he is in your area. Kevin is Platform Evangelist at Adobe Systems. The Pre-Release tour is all about educating people on the new features of Flex 3 and getting people excited about the release. I have to say that I have never really made a commitment to Flex but I think its finally time. If you have read my blog before you know I am a big fan of ActionScript 3 and have a copy of the bible (essential ActionScript 3). When I looked into Flex 2 during it's beta stage I still had questions with how do I get my data in and how do I style my applications. These and many more questions are starting to get answered.

After a great special meeting last month we follow it up with another one. Today Kevin Hoyt will be speaking to a pretty nice size crowd on Flex3 & AIR. I have actually saw Kevin speak before so I know today is going to be a great show. Here are the details from our leader, you can still make it so hurry up and RSVP.

If you have RSVP'd and are still planning to attend... there's no need to do it again. But, if you have not RSVP'd, and ARE planning to attend, or have RSVP'd but are NOT planning to attend, please add/update your RSVP here: RSVP Now! Everyone who attends will get at LEAST one thing, perhaps more. We are really starting the new years off with a bang. Ben Forta is returning to Cleveland with special guest Adam Lehman. There are going to be some great give aways so you do not want to miss this meeting. The real big one is the pass to cfunited. I really hope I win this so can head to a conference this year. Here are the details of the meeting.

Tomorrow at 1pm, we're pleased to have the return of Ben Forta to Cleveland! And, he'll have Adam Lehman of Adobe along as well! They will be talking about Lesser Known ColdFusion 8 Goodies, and there will be an extensive Q&A session where I am sure the future of ColdFusion and other Adobe technologies will be discussed.

We'll have food and other refreshments there. And... we have a ton of giveaways to those lucky to attend. Here's what we'll be drawing for tomorrow:

  • ColdFusion 8
  • A free pass to the CFUNITED 2008 conference (transportation and accommodations not included)
  • Books from Peachpit and Adobe Press
  • Magazines from Fusion Authority Quarterly Update
  • Assorted schwag from Adobe and Teratech, including shirts, hats, bags, travel cups and all sorts of stuff!
It is VITALLY important that we have a firm RSVP total for tomorrow. If you are planning to attend, please use the RSVP form. If you have already RSVPd, you would have received an email. There's no need to do it again, unless you are not attending or if you are bringing a different number. Please use this form and not the regular RSVP form (this is simplified in the new site... which I may demo for you tomorrow if we have time). The meeting is scheduled to run from 1-4pm, and it's at the offices of Dealer Tire, LLC, located at 3711 Chester Avenue, Cleveland, OH, 44114. Currently, we have 38 RSVPs. I am expecting more to show up from Dealer Tire itself, so I expect we'll have a total close to Ben's last meeting.
