I wanted to let everyone about a new series that Joe Rinehart started called Grails for CFML developers. These are short, detailed walk through's on how to get started with Grails. He does a great job of comparing how you would do something in the CFML world and the equivalent of doing the same in Grails. It has been over a year since the last time I looked into Groovy and Grails and wow has it evolved. The 2.0+ framework fixed a bunch of things and added some really great features. There is nothing wrong with learning how do things in another language / framework so as I always do here, I encourage you to pick up another skill.
