IE Net Renderer

I came across this link today while reading a blog post from Mark W. Breneman. IE NetRenderer allows you to check how a website is rendered by Internet Explorer 7, 6 or 5.5. This service points out that they can stand above the rest processing many requests at one time meaning no line to wait in for you which is always nice. In addition to being able to check specific versions of IE you can also check them in mixed and difference mode. This allows you to see how the 2 version of IE render it differently. Here are the difference and mixed mode screen shots i took about 10 minutes ago. This is very helpful seeing how you can not install both version of IE on 1 machine, at least not easily. In my case there a couple things off and probably due to a padding or margin difference but no major problems.

  My problem with services like this is they just give you a snapshot of your site. I am usually worried about how JavaScript works, so these services are useless for that.

  I would not disagree with you but I do think this fills one void. We know the real power behind the application is functionality but the first thing a client will see is the design and for those of who us who live on FF this service keeps us on the same page as our clients.

  Honestly...if you're in web development and you don't have access to IE 6 and 7, then you're doing something wrong. I respect developers who prefer FF to IE (your choice), but to not even HAVE those browsers on your system, or a system available to you is foolishness.

  I have IE 7, Firefox 2.0 and Safari for Win on my machine at work and honestly have never tried to install IE 6 along side it. If you know of an easy solution please share.

  Personally, I have IE 7, FF 2, Safari, and Opera on my dev machine. I have an old spare PC that I remote into for IE 6. But it is not very convenient to have to use another PC for IE6. I sorely wish Microsoft would hire some real programmers that could figure out how to separate IE from the OS as a standalone install...

  And yes, I do know about the Virtual PC image they give away for free to give developers access to IE 6 from the same machine, but that's inconvenient as well.

  Jake I could not agree more. Another point I wanted to make that did not come across is that In my case the differences between the two are subtle to the naked eye.

  Trying ie5.5 I get ablank page with "Internal Error -1". surely that must be them, not my site?
